Behaviour Management Policy

Ashfield Plaza Day Nursery believes that children require routines, structure, boundaries, and clear guidelines about acceptable behaviour. This provides a safe environment which allows children to learn both intellectually and on an interpersonal social level.

All our staff will strive to promote positive behaviour which is socially acceptable. When negative or disruptive behaviour is displayed by a child staff will always intervene.

All our staff are aware that they are role models for the children in their care. Childcare workers need to be consistent in setting limits for children because children are constantly learning from adult behaviour.

Rules will be simple, consistent and fair. This will provide a framework to assist children to understand the effects of their behaviour on their peers, themselves, and their environment. Staff will focus on children’s positive behaviour rather than their negative behaviour. Staff will always be encouraging and will acknowledge children’s achievements and efforts.

Our aim is to build children’s self-esteem and independence through ongoing encouragement and consistent approach.

We believe corporal punishment such as smacking, slapping or shaking are NOT an acceptable means of addressing children’s behaviour. Corporal punishment will therefore not be used in the Ashfield Plaza Day Nursery.

Parents/Carers will be offered support from day care staff in handling difficult behaviour. Parents/Carers will be encouraged to share ideas about how to deal with their children’s behaviour. We believe partnership and communication with Parents/Carers will help towards a consistent approach at home, as well as in the day care service.
