Healthy Meals

Healthy food is very important to us and our cook, Lesley Boulton, is very much part of our team and takes great pride in planning and delivering wholesome balanced menus.

We feel very strongly that children should be encouraged, from an early age, to adopt a healthy attitude to food and eating.  Lesley involves all the children in producing meals: the Pre-School children have a weekly responsibility for producing a sweet or savoury meal for the whole nursery; the Toddlers have a fortnightly responsibility for this for their own room; even the Babies take part, monthly, admittedly with lots of help!

The children have their own vegetable and herb patch so that they can see where their food comes from and then are encouraged to eat the produce.

We promote the “5 a day” principle of healthy eating.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are served at snack times, fresh vegetables at lunch time and fruit for puddings. Meat, fish and vegetarian meals are prepared weekly.  Click Weekly Menu to see the impressive range we offer. Lesley is always keen to involve parents, regularly asking for suggestions.

Sitting down for meals is an important social occasion and, whilst we will never force a child to eat what they refuse, we feel that by making mealtimes happy and enjoyable, children develop good habits.  We encourage the children to serve themselves and to make choices over their breakfast cereals or sandwich fillings: all part of their important development towards independence.

Of course, food hygiene is of the utmost importance and Lesley is delighted that the nursery kitchen was recently given a 5 Star (the highest) rating by Ashfield District Council on behalf of the Food Standards Agency.
